Grond/Worship The Kraken/Xtreem Music/2016 CD Review

  Grond  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  plays  a  brutal  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Worship  The  Kraken"  which  will  be  released  by  Xtreem  Music.

  Thunder and  rain  sounds  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  atmospheric  synths  and  after  a  few  seconds  demonic  vocals  are  added  onto  the  recording  before  introducing  melodic  riffs  onto t he  recording  which  also  takes  the  music  into  more  of  a  heavier  direction  along  with  the  vocals  evolving  into  death  metal  growls.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  dark  and  melodic  style  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  brutal  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  There  is  also  a  great  amount  of  old  school  death  elements  in  the  bands  musical  style  and  some  songs  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  guitars  and  they  also  bring  in  a  cover  of  Goatlord's  "Blood  Monk"  and  as  the  album  progresses  some  tracks  also  start  bring  in  a  small  amount of  high  pitched  screams.

 Grond  plays  a style of  death  metal  that h as  the  modern  day  brutality  while  also  mixing  in  a  great  amount  of  old  school  influences  which  also  makes  the  music  stand  out  a  lot  more,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  H.P  Lovecraft,  Literature  and  The  Ocean  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Grond  are  a  very  great  sounding  brutal  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Kronos  The  Devourer"  "Blood  Monk"  "Devonian  Tyrant"  and  "Typhoon  Is  Coming".  8  out  of  10.

Undead/Blood Enemy/2015 7 Inch Review

  Undead  are  an  international  band  with  members  from  both  Spain  and  the  United  Kingdom  that  plays  a  very  old  school  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2015  ep  "Blood  Enemy".

  A  very  dark,  heavy  and  melodic  sound  starts  off  the  ep  that  goes  back  to  the  early  90's style  of  death  metal  and  a  few  seconds  later  the  music  gets  heavier  while  also  incorporating  blast  beats  and  the  vocals  are  in  between  screams  and  growls  giving t he  songs  a  more  80's  vibe  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  very  old  school.

  Most  of  the  music  sounds  very  raw  while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording  and  both  of  the  tracks  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  whole  ep  also  sticks  to  a  very  heavy  style  from  beginning  to  ending  of  the  recording.

  Undead  plays  a  style of  death  metal  that  goes  back  to  the  mid  80's  and early  90's  era  of  the  genre  and  also  ignores  any  of  the  modern  trends  of t he  past  25  years,  the  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  Satanism,  chaos  and  hate  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Undead  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Evil  Spirits".  8out  of  10.

Harvest/Omnivorous/Symbol Of Domination Productions/2016 EP Review

  Harvest  are  a  band  from  Panama  that  plays  a progressive  mixture  of  death,  groove  and  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  ep  "Omnivourous"  which  was  released  by  Symbol  Of  Domination  Productions.

  A very  avant garde  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  ep  along  with  some  whispered  vocals  a  few  seconds  later  and  after  the  intro  the  music  starts  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  musical  direction  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  sound  powerful  while t he  riffs  bring  in  elements  of  groove  and  melody. 

  Vocals  are  in  the  more  aggressive  vein  of  thrash  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  it  brings  in  the  heaviness  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  the  vocals  also   utilize  growls  and  screams  at  times    while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and fast  parts  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in certain  sections  of  the  recording,  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  bring  in  even  more  of  a  groove  metal  style  and  one  track  brings  in  clean  singing  and  progressive  elements  are  also  utilized  more  as  the  ep  progresses.

  Harvest  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  death,  groove  and  thrash  metal  and  mixes  it  with  some  progressive  elements  to  create  a  style  of t heir  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  chaos,  humanity,  paranormal  and  dark  visual  arts  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Harvest  are  a  very  great  sounding  progressive  mixture  of  death,  groove  and  thrash  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Lavinia"  and  "Hellraiser".  8  out  of  10.  

Rotting Obscene/Depths Of Decay/transcending Records/2016 CD Review

Rotting  Obscene  are  a  band  from  Virginia  that  plays  a  very  technical  and  brutal  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Depths  Of  Decay"  which  was  released  by  Transcending  Records.

  A  very  heavy,  melodic  and  technical  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  guttural  death  metal  growls  a  few  seconds  later  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  90's  influences  and  high  pitched  screams  can  also  be  heard in  the  music  at  times.

  At  times  the  music  can  get  very  brutal  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  solos  and  leads  also  remain  true  to  a  very  melodic  and  technical  style  of  death  metal  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  more  modern  side  of  the  genre  and  all  of the  songs  stick  to  a  very  heavy  musical  direction.

  Rotting  Obscene  plays  a  style  of  death  metal  that  is  very  technical  while  also  being  brutal  at  the  same  time,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Lovecraft,  Occultism,  and  Esoteric  themes.

 In  my  opinion  Rotting  Obscene  are  a  very  great  sounding  technical  and  brutal  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Audient  Void"  "Nightmares  Of  The  Forlorn"  "Absence  Of  Light"  and  "Destroying  Divinity".  8  out  of  10.  

Archetype/Mission/2016 Full Length Review

  Archetype  are  a  band  from  Montreal,  Quebec,  Canada  that  plays  a  progressive  mixture  of  death  and  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2016  album  "Mission".

 Distorted  sounds  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  along  with  some  grim  screams  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  also  get  mixed  with  death  metal  growls  while  the solos  and  leads  are  done  in a  very  melodic  style  and  you  can  also  hear  elements of  German  thrash in  the  vocals.

  At  times  the  music  can  be  very  technical  and  progressive  and  some  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  faster  sections  also  bringing  in  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  a  couple  of tracks  also  brings  in  power metal  vocals  that  are  a  little  bit  out  of  key  and  as  the  album  progresses  synths  can  also  be  heard  briefly  while t he  last  track  brings  in  elements  of  classical  music.

  Archetype  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  thrash  and  death  metal  and  also  takes  them  into  more  of  a  progressive  and  technical  direction  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  adn  real  lise  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Archetype  are  a  very  great  sounding  progressive  mixture  of  death  and  thrash  metal  and  if  you are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Welcome"  "Fondation"  and  "Glimpse".  8  out  of  10.   

Grace Disgraced/Lasting Afterdeaths/Razed Soul Productions/2016 CD Review

  Grace  Disgraced  are a band  from  Russia  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  technical  and  progressive  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Lasting  Afterdeaths"  which  was  released  by  Razed  Soul  Productions.

  A  very  heavy  and  old  school  metal  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  melodic guitar  leads being  added  onto  the  recording  a  few  seconds  later  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  after  awhile  death  metal  growls  make  their  presence  known  on  the  recording  along  with  some  progressive  elements.

  At  times  the  music  can  be  very  technical  while  also  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  early  90's  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have a  very powerful  sound  to  them  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  clean  guitars  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  songs.

  Grace  Disgraced plays  a  musical  style  that  is  mostly  rooted  in  the  90's  technical  and  progressive era  of  the  material  Death  released  in  that  time  period,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  humanity,  philosophy  and  suffering  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Grace  Disgraced  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of   technical  and  progressive  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Grave  Among  The  Stars"  "The  Mute"  and  "What  Hide  The  Woods  Of  Gevaudan".  8  out  of  10.

 

Trauma/Invisible Reality + Promo 1991/Deformeathing/2015 Compilation Album Review

  Trauma  are  a band  from  Poland  that  plays  a  very  traditional  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  a  2016  compilation  that  contains  their  1992  demo  "Invisible  Reality  plus their  1991  promo  which  will be  released  as  a single  album  in  July  by  Deformeathing.

  Epic sounding  synths  start  of  the  compilation  and  after  the intro  the  music  starts  getting  a  lot  more  heavy  along  with  some  morbid  sounding  melodies  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  and  the  vocals  are  all  death  metal  growls  while  the  music  also  sounds  very  extreme  for  the  era  it  was recorded.

  All  of  the  solos  and  leads  remain  very  true  to  a  death  metal  style  while  also  being  very  melodic  at  times and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  some  songs  also  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  and  when  synths  make  their return  they  give  the  music  more  of  a horror  movie  atmosphere  and  the  bonus  track  brings  in  thrash  and  punk  elements  along  with  a  melodic  choir  while  the  songs  on  the  promo  show  a  return  back  to  death  metal  and  a  lot  of  the  songs  on  the  promo  are  the  more  original  and  raw  versions  of  the  tracks  that  appeared  on  the  demo.

  Trauma  played  a  style  of  death  metal  in  this  era  that  was  very  much  true  to  the  style  of  the  genre  was  going  into  at  the  time  while  having  more  of  a  raw  approach  than  the  better  known  bands  of  that  time, the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  serial killers,  violence  and  anti  religion  themes.     

  In  my  opinion  Trauma  are  a  very  great sounding  old  school  death  metal  band  and  if  you are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out t his  compilation.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Hidden  Instincts"  "Escape  Into  The  Shadows"  "The  Dawn"  and  "Human  Race".  8  out  of  10.
