Brood Of Hatred Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

I consider Metal to be an extreme form of expression that permits our greatest feelings as humans to manifest themselves, so for the love of it I chose to form this band and let my own music be heard. Brood Of Hatred was brought together in 2010 by Mohamed Melki (me). The project came after an extensive experience in the Tunisian Metal scene through which I played with numerous Extreme Metal Bands. Brood Of Hatred started as a solo project but it didn't take long before I found members who are ready to commit to the band. The name followed naturally when I first started the project, it came spontaneously as I thought about all the hypocrisy and lies in peoples lives

2.Recently you have put out a new album, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical direction it has taken and also how does it differ from your previous recordings?

The skinless agony record contains 9 tracks and it’s as if a continuity of the EP we released before “new order of intelligence”, and the new thing in it that made us raise the bars of our music is the new professional mix and mastering that we did with our mate Maciej Dawidek at Widek Records, Gdynia, Poland.

3.You new album seems to have a concept, can you tell us a little bit more about the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

While the lyrics themselves are intentionally ambiguous and obscure, it's clear that inspiration comes mainly from our concern about the past, current, and future state of our civilization and the place of Men in the universe. I view our lyrics as lying between the borders of a mystical and a scientific world view while intriguing the listener into trying to come out with different personal interpretations of the songs. While this is how I conceive our lyrics, it should be said that my friend Nidhal Selmi is the one who mainly worked on finalizing them.

4.According to the metal archives page, you released a VHS video a year ago, what was the decision behind using this format insted of the more modern dvd or blue ray?

We created the video with that format using the options we have to make it come to life while we are not intending to release a commercial product but an artistic one so the last thing that come to our mind is the Quality.. and we made the video aiming to spread our music and to deliver our ideas to the fanbase, so the only trick that came to our mind is to use an image display, and the message that shows in the end of the video is the one that resumed the whole idea!

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Brood of hatred'?

The name followed naturally when I first started the project, it came spontaneously as I thought about all the hypocrisy and lies in peoples lives.. and it came through the inner fight we are living within ourselves everyday in a country where metal folks cannot express themselves so a sort of an inner hatred created itself..

6.This band originally started out as a solo project, what was the decision behind forming a full line up?

The whole concept began as a solo project coz we don’t have a metal scene here already, there’s no folks that wanna play and create some extreme metal here, and when I intended to create the project I wasn’t aiming to release it till I leave the country, but after a while when I found people that urged me to move forward like my band mate the guitarist Muhammed Bouchir I got more encouraged without looking back and said “so be it”!

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

The band is currently active, yet we still haven't done any live gigs in Tunisia because of the lack of any proper organization. This doesn't mean that we do not aim to perform on a local, national or international level, and we are already rehearsing since a year and let’s see what this year brings after the album is released..

8.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

Soon some shows will be announced some international shows, we are working on that..

9.The new album came out on Crime Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?

Well Crime Records is a label that came across our mind and it’s so in Harmony with the band's aims and we like that a lot, and we are working hard day and night with the label manager Mr. Martin Steene and preparing a summer plan to push the band forward, and we are simply satisfied with the work with them and its whole concept that will push metal music further and further..

10.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your album by fans of death metal?

Our fans were waiting since a year for our debut, and the preview for the album is gonna be released this month, and we are sure that is gonna be something descent in every way and time will tell.

11.What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

I already started working in the mid of 2013 on some new demos for the new release and that’s gonna be  way to different from “skinless agony” and that’s not to mean that the concept and the aim will change, and there’s a good chance that a new single will be released this summer with a new dimension, new air, and more underrated musicality.. and it sure will be a continuity of what we started coz in BOH everything is related..

12.What are some bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

It's clear that we are a Death Metal band, still we like to experiment with atmosphere and sometimes add some progressive elements to the music. We are mostly influenced by what I like to call Old-school Metal including bands such as Death, Gorguts, Morbid Angel and by newer bands such as Ulcerate.

13.How would you describe the metal scene of your home country Tunisia?

It is very hard to play metal in Tunisia, our main difficulties are: -The Metal scene is very small and underground, we never get coverage from media. -Media portrays metal very negatively and we suffer from a lot of stereotyping and hate. Many accuse us of being Satanists, delinquent, immoral and violent. We are all alone in what we do, we don't have the resources for bands to flourish. It's really hard to find a place for rehearsals, and quite rare to find events where to play. Many of the music festivals just ignore Metal in favor of other genres like Rap, Reggae or Electronic music... The upheavals didn't really change anything, although many metalheads and the metal scene youth contributed to them. The government banned many concerts and we still struggle to change the status-quo.

14.Do you have any non musical interests?

As you know the music is a field that unite us all to the point we all agree and be comprehensive with each other and plus we feel it.. Especially when it comes from the heart and honest and the metal music is a lifestyle not just music to make. And that doesn’t make us prisoners to one thing everyone can make something else with his interests.. for example Muhammed Bouchir (Guitarist) is a body building coach and Melik Melek Kelifa (Guitars) is a doctor.. So to finalize everyone can have his own interests.

15.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Well that’s it for the moment we made our first step to the world and hope we get the support we always wanted and that the project goes to a higher level, and that the music industry pays more attention to this Dark continent, and we want to thank you so much for this amazing interview. Stay Metal!

Lethal Dosage/Consume/Battleground Records/2014 CD Review

Lethal  Dosage  are  a  band  from  Arizona  that  plays  a  mixture  of  death  and  groove  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  album  "Consume"  which  was  released  by  Battleground  Records.

The  album  starts  out  with  growls  and  a  heavy  death  metal  sound  along  with  elements  of  groove  being  brought  into  the  music  as  well  as  some  screams  and  melody  and  the  music  sticks  to  a  mid  paced  direction  for  the  most  part.

As  the  album  continues  the  band  stick  to  a  basic  death/groove  metal  direction  while  also  adding  a  bit  of  melody  in  the  musical  instruments  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  after  awhile  they  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  guitar  leads.

When  the  album  goes  more  into  the  other  songs  they  bring  in  an  instrumental  as  well  as  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  which  they  add  to  their  death/groove  metal  sound  and  you  can  also  hear  traces  of  hardcore  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.

With  this  album  Lethal  Dosage  do  not  bring  in  anything  new  and  the  mixture  of  death  and  groove  metal  has  been  done  before  but  they  do  write  some  very  decent  sounding  mid  paced  death/groove  metal  songs  with  a  good  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  bringing  in  solos  which  keep  them  away  from t he  standard  groove  sound.

Song  lyrics  cover  dark,  hateful  and  everyday  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  as  well  as  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

In  my  opinion  lethal  Dosage  are  a  very  decent  sounding  mixture  of  death  and  groove  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  album>  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Drink"  "Melody"  "Matter  of  Honor"  and  "Sleep".  7/5  out  of  10.

Tortharry Interview

Tortharry – interview for TrueBringerOfDeath Zine

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new album?

After the album release, we went on the November Massacre Tour to promote it, had one hell of an album release party with Derrick Green from Sepultura as our special guest, as well as played few shows in the new year. Other than that, no significant developments, as it is still too early to see where to go next, although, we are getting some feedback already, generally positive, so only time will tell, if we are heading in the right direction.

2.Recently you have put out a new album, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical direction it has taken and also how does it differ from your past recordings?

We are not the kind of band that would alter its style dramatically with each new album. Of course, we try to make every new album a little bit different than the one before it, but to what extend a fan or a reviewer can perceive it as a change or not, we cannot objectively tell. Either way, we do not want to become entrenched in a single way of composing things. Far from it. We are always influenced by what we like, as well as by what we may have recently heard, or what caught our attention. Each one of us has his favorite acts, from which he draws inspiration for his compositions, and then it is up to all three of us to agree on how to best combine all these influences into a new song. In fact, this new album is the first one which we recorded in three-member line-up only, which is for example reflected in the guitar riffs, which are this time made only for one guitar. In the past, we always worked with two guitars complementing each other, but now it is more the case of more straightforward and more compact riffs, rather than expanding melodies or multiple solos. Additionally, this time we also focused more on the vocals, in the sense of me and Martin alternating more often than before, which in our opinion makes the songs more diverse, both on the album as well as on live gigs.
In my opinion the new album is more straightforward, rawer, faster, with more changes in tempo and in vocals. Additionally, we included some more “modern” elements here and there, which is something we did not do before.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the new release explores?

A permeating theme is a crucial element of this new album. Its very title “Follow” refers to man as a creature that is easily swayed by crowd mentality and especially by some charismatic figure who can easily manipulate both individuals and said crowds. Actually, our lyricist Štefan Ležovič made a list about what each song means, so here it is, and maybe your readers can guess what belongs to which song J

Wars can be waged even for noble reason, but on the front lines, it is always the case of ordinary people slaughtering other ordinary people.
There are those, who are willing to forgo free will and the right to choose, for the mere promise of material wealth and comfortable existence.
Man can be so weak and empty that joining some movement or following a strong leader becomes a necessity, for he does not know what to do with his own life.
Is it better to keep people in blissful ignorance regarding their future, even if you know that they are going to die? Or do you tell them the truth even at the risk of them spending the last moments of their lives more frightened than before?
The promise of salvation can make many follow senseless orders regardless of their consequences.
Sometimes, one’s petty anger leads to a point, where one responds to words with clenched fists and punches.
It is surprising how many people are willing even today to follow an ideology that was defeated a long time ago.
Focusing only on one’s own needs may seem like the right thing to do, but only to the moment when you need someone else and you realize that you are all alone.
No matter what path you follow in life, what idols or what leaders, in the end you have to answer to yourself.

4.I have read that the band use have the names 'Imago' and 'Executor' what was the decision behind the name changes and also what is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Tortharry'?

It was the case of gradual evolution. The band began forming already from 1984 onwards, and way back then the name was IMAGO, since it was something of a garage rock band playing on some local dance nights at the most. After all, we were 14 back then. Later, we began to incline towards hard ’n heavy, and were heavily influenced by icons such as Slayer, Sepultura or Metallica, and so we decided to change the name to something that has more balls to it. Initially, we meant to keep that name, but found out later that it was already used by one other band, which prompted our search for yet another original name, which arose from the distortion of the word “tortura” (meaning torture). And so in 1991, Tortharry were born. The word itself has no meaning.

5.The band has been around since 1991, what is it that motivates you to stay around and create music after all of these years?

First and foremost, to get our music to more fans abroad, which is our priority. We do what we can to get contacts outside Czech Republic, but it is not easy, as many can surely attest to that. We do have some notable achievements in this area, that being a tour in Brazil, on which Tortharry supported Gorgoroth and Belphegor, or a mini-tour with Sepultura, but there is lot more we would like to do. Being on a big tour with a big star is often times not that much about how well can you play, but rather about being on the right place in the right time, as well as having a financial backing. Another big dream of ours is having our albums released abroad under license by some big label (that said, we are 100% satisfied with our current label MetalGate Records), which may be a sort springboard towards bigger shows alongside bigger bands. In any case, we shall keep working hard as we always do, and we shall see. This is our motivation. Tortharry is our life, beside of course our families and our personal lives over which the band at times takes precedence.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?

That is a no-brainer – two shows with the legendary DEATH in 1999, wherein we organized one of those and it was the last show of Chuck in the Czech Republic. Honor to his memory. Next in line is the aforementioned Brazilian tour with Gorgoroth and Belphegor in 2007, and last but not least, the 2012 mini-tout with Sepultura.

As far as our stage performance goes, I would put it into the category of classic technical death metal performances, meaning that we emphasize the music side and the stage visuals, but since we are only three, there is not much chance of doing some elaborate show. We build on delivering a precise musical performance.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

To promote “Follow”, we already had the November Massacre Tour around Czech Republic, and other than that we plan to play the highest number of shows possible, both at home and around Europe. Our summer highlight is the MetalGate Czech Death Fest (www.czechdeathfest.cz), which we co-organize with our label MetalGate Records, and on which we always perform. This year, we shall have SEPTICFLESH and LOCK UP as headliners, so you are all cordially invited to come to our little town of Červený Kostelec between June 12 and June 14., 2014.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of death metal?

In Czech Republic, we’ve has thus far an utterly positive feedback to our new album. When it comes to worldwide feedback, that is yet to come.

9.What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

Right now, it is too early to tell anything specific, but in general we will keep heading the way we do now, so our music will be first and foremost the good old Tortharry, with some modern influence here and there, so that we keep in touch with the current trends in death metal. It goes without saying that our death metal basis will not change.

10.What are some bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Our influences include Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Suffocation, Sepultura, Death, Slayer, Gorefest and many others. In fact, we have so many favorite bands that naming all of them would take a long time indeed.

As to what I am listening to these days, I have a very wide spectrum. Simply put, many styles and kinds of music, nothing truly specific.

11.Do you have any non musical interests?

Truth be told, music occupies a great deal of my spare time, so much so, there is virtually no time left for anything else, all the more because what time I do have left, I dedicate to my family.

12.Before we wrap up this interview do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thanks very much for this opportunity and hail to all fans of good music.

Without Mercy Interview

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording and release of the new ep?

Mostly we have been crazy busy adding some new things to our live show and booking the release tour for western canada.  We even started writing our next EP and planning some things for our internet fans that can’t get out to shows.

2.Recently you have released a new ep, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical direction it has taken and also how does it differ from your past recordings?

This ep was a great musical direction for us. It really represents the journey and path that we went on to get this thing out.  It really stands alone on many levels for us based on production value, song structure and musicianship. But probably one of the best parts about it was it helped us to close a chapter on a previous and outdated representation of the band. It helped us to evolve and bring along our fans and to reconnect with everything that made us start this in the first place. It was an absolute rebirth... hence the EP Title, Reborn.

3.This is the first release in 4 years, can you tell us a little bit more about the gap?

To be honest the gap was a result of being swamped.  The last release that we put out brought on a plethora of opportunities that were not available to us before.  We had festival appearances, multiple tours and even press events that struck us off guard.  When you’re an indie band doing things on your own with a complete DIY, noone is there to prepare you or guide you through this.  By the time we looked up it had already been three years!  This time around we are much more equipped and have a solid team helping us out.

4.Can you tell us a little bit more about the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the new release?

For this release, the lyrics really hit close to home.  When it came time to write the album we had made the decision to go with a really honest and organic approach.  Mostly the songs deal with things like, the loss of close friends and family, the internal conflict of self worth and even rebuilding your identity after a tremendous loss.  For me personally, the opening track deals a lot with some of the ignorance and empty egos that wrap around someone who has a very warped sense of entitlement.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Without Mercy'?
The name came from a combination of factors.. we wanted something powerful but also recognizable.  Something that represented how were about this entire organization, tenacious.

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Our stage performance has be known for its energy level but probably more so for our humor. We love a great casual feel and will even crack a joke or two amongst some of the highest energy head spins around.  As for memorable shows who can forget great festivals like  Hell Mend Ya in Prince George, Armstrong Metal Fest, or any shows put on in Red Deer, Calgary and our hometown in Abbotsford. Those crowds are insane.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
Of course!  Without Mercy heads out on tour in May to cover as much of western canada as we can.  Then we have some festival appearances that should take us through the summer.  Also NYB productions is hosting our dual cd release show in Abbotsford and Vancouver on March 28 and 29.  Details for those shows and our tour can be found on our facebook page.

8.The new ep was self released, are you open to working with another record label again in the future?
We have yet to have the pleasure of working with a label. We’re not closed minded in that regard at all and would welcome the opportunity if it was presented.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your newer music by fans of death and thrash metal?
So far the reaction to the EP has been astounding.  Many people have commented on the change in direction that we have undergone and they seem to whole heartily approve of it. We have noticed the highest amount of digital downloads on release day that we have ever seen and this time was also the first time we handled pre orders which also seemed to spike.

10.When can we expect a full length?
Hahaha to quote my favorite horror movie, “In time”.

11.What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
It has been an overwhelmingly eclectic collection in the last few years. Personally I’m really into the latest Jeff Loomis solo record that was an incredible release. Band wise Lamb of God is a staple but also our band standards such as:  Aeon, Cannibal Corpse, Nevermore, Pantera, Man Must Die and Decapitated.  We listened to a lot of the older albums which we all really dig as a band too.  Albums like:  Slayer’s God Hates Us All, Slipknot’s Iowa, Pantera’s Far Beyond Driven and some of the local bands that we love since they’re great buddies of ours.

12.Do you have any non musical interests?
We all do!  Matt (drums) is pretty handy with his green thumb and all. Tristan (Bass) really digs the lake, talking gear and beer tasting. And I’m quite the video game nerd and love martial arts training.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
Thanks a million for this man!  And as always, Fuck Pussy Metal.

Mesetiah/Tesis/3rd Track productions/2014 EP Review

Mesetiah  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  very  heavy  and  brutal  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2014  ep  "Tesis"  which  was  released  by  3rd  Track  Productions.

The  ep  starts  out  with  a  very  heavy  and  brutal  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sounding very  powerful  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  and  thrash  influences  and  after  awhile  melody  and  leads  are  brought  into  the  music.

As  the  ep  continues  the  band  stick  to  mostly  a  mid  paced,  old  school  but  still  brutal  sound  while  also  still  utilizing  catchy  sounding  melodies  at  time s as  well  as  a  small  amount  of  groove  metal  elements  and  on  the  last  song  they  spped  up  a  bit  and  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats.

Mesetiah  are  another  band  that  sticks  to  an  old  school  death  metal  sound  and  while  there  is  nothing  original  on  this  ep,  the  band  makes  up  for  it  with  their  talent  and  their  ability  to  play  their  instruments  as  well  as  adding  in  catchy  parts  to  keep  their  music  interesting.

Song  lyrics  cover  dark  and  violent  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.

In  my  opinion  Mestiah  are  a  very  decent  sounding  old  school,  brutal  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Legacy  Of  The  Damned"  and  "Mother  Of  All  Executions".  7/5  out  of  10.
