Ectoplasma/Cavern Of Foul Unbeings/Memento Mori/2018 CD Review

  Ectoplasma  are  a  band  from  Greece  that  plays  a  very  old  school  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their album  "Cavern  Of  Foul  Unbeings"  which  will  be  released  in  2018  by  Memento  Mori.

  Clean  playing  along  with  a  horror  movie  orientated  intro  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  which  also  introduces  death  metal  growls  onto  the  recording   along  with  the music  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  while  the  solos  and  leads  remain  very  true  to  an  old  school  style  of  death  metal  as  well  as  having t heir  melodic  moments  along  with  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  the  guitar  riffing  and  a  couple  track  also  brings  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  and  horror  movie  samples  and  they  close  the  album  with  a  cover  of  Unleashed's  "The  Immortals".

  Ectoplasma  plays  a  style  of  death  metal  that  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  early  90's,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  horror  and  anti  Christianity  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Ectoplasma  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  death  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Entranced  In  Blood"  "Cavern  Of  Foul  Unbeings"  "The  Unspeakable  One"  and  "Disembodied  Voice".  8  out  of  10.

Devoid Of Thought/Astral Necrosis/Caligari Records/2017 Demo Review

  Devoid  Of   Thought  are  a  band  from  Italy  that  plays  a  very  technical and  progressive  mixture  of  death  and  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  demo  "Astral  necrosis"  which  was  released  by  Caligari  Records.

  A  very  dark  and  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  demo  along  with  some  death  metal  growls  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  fashion  while  the  music  has  a  lot  of  roots  in  the  mid  80's  to  early  90's  as  well  as  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bringing  in   a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

  A  great  amount  of  thrash  influences  can  also be  heard  in  the  bands  musical  style  while  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  the  music  also  mixing  in  a  great  amount  of  prog  and  technical  elements  which  also  adds  a  modern  edge  to  a  style  that  is  mostly  old  school  and  the  music  always  remains  very  heavy  and  all  of t he  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  Devoid  Of  Thought  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  old  school  death  and  thrash  metal  and  mixes  it  with  progressive  and  technical  elements  to  create  something  very  different,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  scientific  and  psychological  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Devoid  Of  Thought  are  a  very  great  sounding  progressive  and  technical  mixture  of  death  and  thrash  metal  and  if  you  are  a fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Necrotic  Surface  Discarded".  8 out  of  10.

  

Repression/Wretched Domain/Caligari Records/2017Demo Re-issue Review

  Repression  are  a  band  from  Finland  that  plays  a  mixture  of  death  and  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of their  2016  demo  "Wretched  Domain"  which  was  re-issued  on  cassette  in  2017  by  Caligari  Records.

  A  sci-fi  orientated  intro  starts  off  the  demo  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  which  also  uses  a  decent  amount  of  melody  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  80's  style  death  metal  growls  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  as  well  as  the  music  being  rooted  in  the  mid  80's  to  early  90's.

  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  dark  and  melodic  in  the  old  school  tradition  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to t hem  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well as  well  as  some  screams  also  being  utilized  at  times  and  the  music  also  remains  very  heavy.

  Repression  plays  a  style  of  death/thrash  metal  that  has  its  roots  in  the  mid  80's  to  early  90's,  the  production  sounds  very  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  war,  death  and  repression  themes.

 In  my  opinion  Repression  are  a  very  great  sounding  death/thrash  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  demo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Heretic  Ways".  8  out  of  10.     

    

Desecrated Grounds/Lord Of Insects/2017 CD Review

  Desecrated  Grounds  are  a  band  from Finland  that  plays  a  mixture  of  death  and  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their self  released  2017  album  "Lord  Of  Insects".

  A  very  fast  and  aggressive  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  80's  death  metal  growls  along  with  the  riffs  being  very  heavily  influenced  by  thrash  metal  and  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to them.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  the  music  brings  in  a  mixture  of  both  old  school  and  modern  influences  along  with  the  solos  bringing  in  more  of  a  mid  80's  to  early  90's  extreme  metal  style  as  well  as  the  riffs  also  bringing  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  the  music  always  sticks  to  a  very  heavy  sound.

  Desecrated  Grounds  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  old  school  death  metal  and  thrash  and  mixes  them  together  to create  a  very  heavy  album,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  for  being  a  self  released  recording  while  the  lyrics  cover  violent  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Desecrated  Grounds  are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  death  and  thrash  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Story  Untold"  "Stabwound  Addict"  "The  Death  In  Me"  and  "Valve".  8  out  of  10.

  Legion  Of  Wolves  are  a  band  from  Ireland  that  plays  an  old  school  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  album  "Bringers  Of  The  Dark  Sleep"  which  will b e  released  in  2018  by  Metal  Scrap  Records.

  Sounds  of  war  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  musical  direction  while the  vocals  are  mostly  death  metal  growls  and  screams  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  bringing  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  as  well  as  the  music  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  Swedish  style.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  songs  bring  in a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic style  and  the  music  is  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  as well  as one  of  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing.

  Legion  Of  Wolves  plays  a  style  of  death  metal  that  is  very  old  school  in  the  Swedish  tradition,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  violent  themes.

 Devastation  where  a  band  from  Chicago,  Illinois  that  was  around  during  1986 and 1987 that  played  a  mixture  of  death  and  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  compilation  album  "Dispensable  Bloodshed"  which  was  released  by  Vic  Records.

  War  sounds  start  off  the  compilation  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  and  melodic  musical  direction  while  the  solos  and  leads  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  riffing  being  very  heavily  rooted  in  thrash  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.

 Vocals a re  mostly  death  metal  growls  and  screams  which  are  done  in  more  of  the  80's  style  while the  solos  and  leads  bring  in  a  very  raw  and  chaotic  style  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  as  the  compilation  progresses  a  brief  use  of  horror  movie  samples  and  acoustic  guitars  can  be  heard  as  well  as  an  instrumental  and  a  couple  of  live  tracks,

  Devastation  played  a  musical  style  that  took  early  death  metal  and  mixed  it  with  thrash  to  create  a  musical  style  that  was  very  extreme  for  its  time,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  violence,  death  and  destruction  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Devastation  where  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  death  and  thrash  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Devastation"  "Apocalyptic  Warrior"  "Dispensable  Bloodshed"  and  "Realm  Of  The  Mastadon".  8  out  of  10.

Corpse Garden/IAO 269/Godz Of War Productions/2017 CD Review

  Corpse  Garden  are  a  band  from  Costa  Rica  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  brutal  form  of  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2017  album  "IAO  269"  which  was  released  by  Godz  Of  War  Productions.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sounding  very  powerful  while  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  atmospheric  elements  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  death  metal  growls  and  screams  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  some  progressive  and  technical  elements  and  during  the  faster  sections  of   the  songs  the  music  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  brutality,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  when  spoken  word  parts  are  utilized  they  give  the music  more of  a  ritualistic  feeling  and  a  couple  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Corpse  Garden  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  atmospheric  and  brutal  style  of  death  metal  from  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  Occultism,  Thelema  and  Gnosticism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Corpse  Garden  and  if  you  are  a  fan of  atmospheric  and  brutal  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Aeon  Of  Horus"  "Selonomantic  Ecstasies"  "The  Elevenfold  Vibration"  and  "Loathing".  8  out  of  10.
