1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?
Hello Metalheads out there. We are DESERTED FEAR, a death metal band from Eisenberg in the East Thuringian woods of Germany. Mahne (Vocals, Guitar) and me (Fabian/Guitar) formed the band in 2007. Later Simon (Drums) joined us. When we play live, bass player Albi completes the line-up. Just four freaks with a love for beer and headbanging, so normal Metalheads I think. In 2010 we released a self produced 4 track demo and now, on September 28th 2012, FDA REKOTZ releases our debut album called MY EMPIRE. We recorded the album also on our own but this time Dan Swanö did mix and mastering. Crazy how the thing turned out and we are very happy with the album, the sound, the artwork and the label. Ok, that’s the short history of DESERTED FEAR.
2. How would you describe your musical sound?
As we started the band our music was more modern and melodic. But then we listened to some older stuff and our music became more raw. We are inspired by 90's death metal, but we just play what we like to play. There are no borders as long as its metal and fits to DESERTED FEAR. So I would name our style German death metal, something between Sweden and the US.
3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
Our lyrics are full of war, destruction, blood, death and so on. Nothing special or deep, just the classic themes. First we think about the vocal line and then about the lyrics. This way we can get much out of the vocals and these themes are made for this way!
4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
Haha, I knew this question will come one day. The inspiration behind the name was to find an easy name which isn’t used before. I can tell you, that’s not easy! We had thousand ideas, but all were already used. We liked both words, DESERTED and FEAR. So we just connected these words and DESERTED FEAR had a name. The interpretation is up to you ;)
5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
Hard to say. Each gig has his own vibe and there is at least ever one Metalfreak who bangs his head. But a bit special was the gig this year in the southern German Aalen together with our comrades in REVEL IN FLESH. We filled in very short for MASSIVE ASSAULT. That was a bad surprise for the audience, no one knew us and we didn’t knew what awaits us. But the response of the audience was awesome and we had much fun this evening. When we play live we give 100%, it doesn’t depends on the venue or audience. We like our music and we love to play it live. It’s our passion and we have much fun on stage!
6. Do you have any touring plans for the new release?
This year we play some club shows and we hope to play a short tour and some festivals next year. It’s nothing booked until now, so we will see. We try to play a lot, but it’s hard to get gigs these days.
7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of death metal?
The feedback has been great until now. It’s crazy for us when people from Asia or wherever write us to order our stuff or tell us that they like our music and looking forward for the album. As we started the Facebook page we mostly knew the people who liked us, but now we get likes from people everywhere in the world. That’s just crazy.
8. Are there any other projects besides this band or is this a full time line up?
Our bass player Albi is working on his Black/Trash project called KINGDOM OF BLOOD. It’s cool stuff, hope he will put out something one day. Mahne just do DESERTED FEAR and Simon drums also in another band and helps out here and there sometimes. I also just play in DESERTED FEAR, but for the recording of our upcoming debut MY EMPIRE I increased my recording equipment and now I want to do some professional recordings for other bands. Simon and me also wants to offer some session drum recording then.
9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
Some weeks ago we started to work on new stuff and it definitely sounds like DESERTED FEAR. It’s strange, we didn’t wrote new stuff since almost a year, since as we started to think about to record our debut album. As the album was done, we asked ourselves if we can put out again an album on this level. And it seems as we can! But we don’t stress, our debut MY EMPIRE is still unreleased and will be out on the 28th of September this year. So step by step.
10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Our main influence I see in OBITUARY, ASPHYX, NECROPHOBIC, DISMEMBER and some other stuff, but not BOLT THROWER, haha. It’s a great band but the funny fact is, that people in some reviews wrote to hear a huge influence by BOLT THROWER out of our music, but no one of us listened to their albums. That’s very cool! But damn, we should start listen to them, I love it live and this old tank destroys everything! There’s sadly much great stuff we missed I think. We are all young guys and not grown up with this music, so we are still on the way back in metal. But what we definitely not missed from nowadays, is DEMONICALs last album DEATH INFERNAL and also the last two ENTRAILS. These releases are fucking awesome and impressive.
11. Outside of music what are some of your interests?
Beer, Girls and what comes with these things, haha. We don’t really have interests outside of the music. Simon has a preference for digging graves due his job as cemetery gardener, Mahne does athletics and I ride motorbike but the music is for all of us a big part in our lives.
12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
Yes, thanks for the interview! Check out DESERTED FEAR and our label FDA REKOTZ. Don’t forget the 28th of September, release date for our debut album MY EMPIRE. Thanks for reading. Prost! DESERTED FEAR
