Purgatorium are a band from Sweden that plays a atmospheric form of death metal and this is a review of their 2017 compilation album "Still In Search" which was released by Discouraged Records.
Heavy guitar riffing along with some drum beats and death metal growls start off the album and spoken word parts are also used at times and elements if thrash can also be heard in the music at times along with all of the musical instruments having a very powerful sound to them.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very melodic fashion while atmospheric synths are also used briefly on one of the tracks and when the music speeds up a small amount of blast beats can be heard and at times the riffs also have their melodic moments and as the compilation progresses high pitched screams are added into the music and acoustic guitars are also used briefly and one track is long and epic in length.
Purgatorium played a style of death metal on t his compilation that was very different for the time it was released and also having some atmospheric touches, the production sounds very dark and heavy while the lyrics cover dark and mythological themes.
In my opinion Purgatorium are a very great sounding atmospheric death metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACCKS INCLUDE "Still In Search" and "Incoming". 8 out of 10.
