Nephren-Ka are a band from France that has been featured before in this zine and plays a very brutal form of death metal and this is a review of their 2017 album "La Grande De L 'Epice" which will be released in October by Dolorem Records.
Sci fi soundscapes start off the album before going into a very heavy and brutal direction along with the vocals being a mixture of guttural death metal growls and high pitched screams while the faster sections of the songs also bring in a great amount of blast beats along with the riffs also bringing in a decent amount of melody.
When guitar solos and leads are utilized they remain true to a traditional style of death metal while the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and some of the riffing and leads also gets very technical at times and on one track the vocals almost use a thrash approach and when synths are utilized briefly they give the music a more epic atmosphere and they close the album with a cover of Candlemass's "Mirror Mirror".
Nephren-Ka creates another recording that remains true to the brutal death metal style that was established on their previous release, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics are a concept album based upon Frank Herbert's Dune novels.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Nephren-Ka and if you are a fan of brutal death metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Plan To master The Universe" "Idar Fen Adijica" "Fenring's Test" and "Mirror Mirror". 8/5 out of 10.
