Barus are a band from France that plays a very progressive form of death metal and this is a review of t heir self titled 2016 ep which was released by Les Acteurs De L'Ombre Productions.
A very heavy sound starts off the ep along with some blast beats and melodies and after a few seconds death metal growls make their presence known on the recording and the riffs also mix in a great amount of prog metal elements and high pitched screams along with shouts can also be heard in some parts of the songs.
Elements of groove can be heard quite a bit throughout the recording and when guitar solos and leads are utilized they also give the music more of a melodic progressive metal feeling and one of the tracks also brings in a brief use of melodic singing and spoken word parts and while the music does has its fast moments it usually for the most part sticks to a mid paced musical direction and there is also a small amount of clean playing being utilized at times.
Barus plays a musical style that takes prog and death metal and mixes it in with some mainstream elements while still having a very atmosphere to them, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover dark, occult and metaphysical themes.
In my opinion Barus are a very great sounding progressive death metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Tarot" and "Chalice". 8 out of 10.
