Rouwen where a band from the Netherlands that played a very traditional form of death metal and this is a review of their 1997 ep "Rouwkots" which will be re-issued by Vic Records on February 22nd, 2016.
A very heavy and raw sound starts off the ep along with some death metal growls and chaotic guitar leads a few seconds later and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can be heard and you can also hear some dark sounding melodies in the music at times while the vocals are easy to understand.
All of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and throughout the recording you can hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and spoken word parts can also be heard in the music briefly and the music sounded very heavy, r aw and aggressive for the time it was recorded and you can also hear a slight touch of hardcore punk at times and the whole ep also remains very heavy and brutal from beginning to ending of the recoridng.
Rouwen played a style of death metal that was very heavy and brutal for its time while also having more of an understandable growling approach and catchier riffs, the production sounds very heavy for the time period it was recorded while the lyrics are written in Dutch and cover hatred and violence themes.
In my opinion Rouwen where a very great sounding traditional death metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this re-issue. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Brand" and "Als Vuur". 8 out of 10.
